Inferno: Omniabsence Filled by His Greatness
08/01/14 || Cobal
The problem with underground black metal bands is that they seem predestined to remain obscure until someone revives their old glories, and that normally happens long after they split. Even with an extensive discography and a nearly 2 decades career, Inferno from the Czech Republic are still supposed to send us —and probably quite a few other webzines— their new release, speaking of which, I’ve got to say I did enjoy. Whereas I was expecting some blasphemous stuff á la Profanatica or something, I’m detecting some blasphemous record á la… I can’t really mention one name only, and still, they get the job done. On the one hand, you get cold riffs, raw production and 5-6 min songs, and on the other, an extensive and simple but atmosphere-creating use of keyboards in every single track here. Now some would say that such feature does nothing but soften the once absolutely raw sound of trve black metal, and they would be right in most cases. Not in this one, they ain’t. Au contraire, when you use the keyboards not to soften, but to tense the very air in the room, you’re doing something right in my book. Another wise move these guys make is telling their vocalist when to shut the fuck up. Few things annoy me more than a shriekish/growlish/whateverish mother fucker who wants to be present during every single second of the goddamn record. Anyway, one does get to listen to the music when is due here.
The cons of this record are not even such if you’re into black metal at all, but I’ll give the haters this: it’s true, there’s probably a thousand other records of the likes out there. Cheers.
7/10: Probably the highest grade that an album like this will get in the 2010s.
After going thru that crap, you most likely wanna read something way more interesting. You do, admit it.
